TRIVIA: In the novel, on which the movie was based, Bobby Rayburn played for the Red Sox, and the story was set primarily in and around Boston.
Wesley Snipes originally wanted to play the role of Gil Renard (Robert De Niro).
Robert De Niro took the Yankees bobblehead doll as a souvenir. The production company paid collector Anne Wells, who loaned it to the movie, four hundred dollars for the doll.
Cal Ripken, Jr., who served as a consultant on the film, recalled in Sports Illustrated having lunch with Robert De Niro, with De Niro asking him about the Red Sox fans. Ripken also said it was a little creepy meeting De Niro at first, since when he did, the method actor was listening to an audio tape of Robert John Bardo, who stalked, and later murdered Rebecca Schaefer.
Brad Pitt turned down the role of Bobby Rayburn, wishing rather to play the role of Gil Renard.
Tony Scott turned down The Rock (1996) to direct this film.
Tony Scott turned down the offer to direct twice, as he disliked the script and had no interest in baseball. He changed his mind after Robert De Niro signed on, as he'd always wanted to work with De Niro.
