TRIVIA: Macaulay Culkin was paid $4,500,000 to star in the film, the biggest salary ever to a twelve-year-old child actor.
Several of the cameras froze during production of the film, because it was so cold.
All of the children who appeared in the toy store scene were allowed to take their favorite toy home as part of their salary. Even though it didn't work, Macaulay Culkin was allowed to keep the Talkboy.
In Home Alone (1990), Kevin watches a movie called "Angels with Filthy Souls." In this sequel, he watches that film's sequel, "Angels with Even Filthier Souls."
Entertainment Weekly had a doctor analyze what the actual effects of the injuries to Harry and Marv would be. Bricks to the face would have caused "at best, brain damage, at worst, death."
The swimming pool scene was shot at the Four Seasons in Chicago, Illinois, due to the fact that the Plaza Hotel doesn't have a swimming pool located on-site.
Kevin's room service bill indicates that he ordered two chocolate cakes, six chocolate mousses with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream topped with M&Ms, chocolate sprinkles, cherries, nuts, marshmallows, caramel syrup, chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, whipped cream, and bananas, six custard flans, a pastry cart, eight strawberry tarts, and 36 chocolate-covered strawberries.
Catherine O'Hara was worried her character wasn't trying hard enough to find Kevin. Scenes were added to show her concern. O'Hara said she practiced her "guilty-sad" face at home.
When Kevin got on the New York plane he sits next to a French man asking him if he's ever been to Florida, the man responds in French, what he said was "What's that? I'm from France and I'm a tourist here, it's my first time coming to America. Do you know a good restaurant? Or maybe your parents they know a good place? Why aren't you responding? You speak a bit of French right? I don't speak English at all, give me a bit of help at least. My name is Andre, what's your name?"
Chris Columbus recalled that the production spent a lot of money on artificial snow for Central Park, and then New York City had a blizzard.
A real version of the Talkboy, the tape recorder Kevin plays with in the movie, was created by Tiger Electronics shortly after the film's release (along with its pink-and-purple counterpart, the Talkgirl).
The carpet was removed from The Plaza lobby for one scene so that Macaulay Culkincould slip and slide on the floor. Plaza owner President Donald Trump liked it so much, he never had it refitted.
Brenda Fricker's character the "pigeon woman" is based on the "old bird woman" from Mary Poppins (1964).
The Plaza Hotel used to offer "The Home Alone Experience" around Christmas where guests could pay to stay in a room similar to the room Kevin stayed in, receive Home Alone gifts including the movies, and take a limo and see some of the filming locations including the toy store upon which Duncan's Toy Chest was based. As of March 1, 2008, the Plaza has been a combination of hotel rooms and private condominium units.
When Kevin is at Central Park, there is a close up of a monument of a man pointing to the right. It belongs to Jose de San Martin, Argentinian national hero born in 1778.
