INSPIRATION: ART & DESIGN: ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS SUMMER EXHIBITION 2024

This year I made my first ever trip to see the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. And I’m not sure what took me so long! As an art lover it really is something I should have experienced by now but better late than never!

The first thing that was surprising to me were the amount of people who came seemingly with the intention to buy. There was a lot of talk going on around me about what was unsold and how much things cost. I was also surprised by how many editions of things to buy of each thing, obviously some being one off paintings but that didn’t seem to be the case in the majority. And so much was already sold by the time I got there that I assume if you wanted to buy something you’d have gone earlier. All this talk of buying surprised me because I have never been to an exhibition before where buying was a feasible option. It gave a whole new dimension to proceedings.

The next thing that was new to me was the lack of information given while in the gallery about each piece. I’m used to a card with an artist and a title – in the summer exhibition this doesn’t exist – there are only numbers. I love this because you don’t immediately judge a piece by who made it. I think sometimes the fame or reputation of an artist can change your opinion of a piece. You are handed a book when you enter so you can look up the information on all the art it’s just not visible side by side with the art. I liked this and hardly opened the book not wanting to be clouded by names and prices. Just so happens that the pieces I liked the most were very expensive, I always knew I had expensive taste!

This exhibition has inspired me a great deal, I will finitely be creating my own pieces soon to submit for future exhibitions and if not successful I will just build up a collection of art to adorn my own walls which I hope in the future will start to look like a gallery.

I’m sharing with you today some of my favourite pieces from the exhibition, click on the images to be taken to the RA website where you can see prices and options to buy in case anything interests you.
