INSPIRATION: INTERIORS: MURALS
I love art in the home, I love to decorate my walls with things are interesting to look at, you can see from my Gallery Wall post that I am maybe a little obsessed with it, and also driven to create things to decorate the walls of others.
There’s another option though, something a little more permanent, art that goes directly on the wall and not in a frame attached to it; the mural. I love murals, I think they’re amazing and I think they’re brave. They’re brave because they take a lot of time and precision, there’s not a lot of room for error and at the end of the day someone could just decide to paint over them. They’re also brave because unlike a gallery wall, they’re not easy to change. But they can transform a space, they look incredible, and I think they’re a special type of decoration, especially if done by a great artist.
I tried my hand at my own mural. Having never done one before I decided to do a test inside a wardrobe. It started off with trying a few different pens. I needed a paint pen rather than a paintbrush as my designs are created with continuous lines and that’s almost impossible to do with a paintbrush over these large spaces unless you use quite a thick brush with a lot of paint on, which would make a completely different effect. So, I needed a good pen. I ended up using one of these (or rather 3 of these).
I did encounter some issues that I would have to work a way around if I was to this this on another wall. The main issue was that the wall was painted with white paint that had a slightly chalky texture, this would attach itself to the nib of the pen and make the line less strong as it went along the wall. Also, some parts of the wall were more textured than others so that in these places the line was not as solid. You can see this in the close-up pictures below.
I think that the overall effect is good though, and it was exciting to see a project that had been in my head for so long come to life.
I’d love to know if you’ve tackled your own mural project, how did that turn out?
