JUST FINISHED WATCHING: LAST CALL: WHEN A SERIAL KILLER STALKED QUEER NEW YORK (2023)
As the AIDS crisis intensifies in the early 1990s, homophobia and hate crimes increase, and a serial killer preys on gay men in New York City by infiltrating the queer nightlife to identify his victims.
MY VERDICT: There are some things I thought were done really well in this documentary. The main one being that they focused on the victims and I think that is an important change that has been made in a lot of modern true crime series. It also did a good job of giving the history and the culture of the time and place. However there was something about his series that didn’t grab and hold my attention, I can’t quite place what it was, I didn’t enjoy the re-enactment parts and possibly the pacing was off. Maybe it’s just because I always expect the HBO documentaries to be the absolute best. But I think it’s important to tell the stories of these victims.
