JUST FINISHED WATCHING: LOVE HAS WON (2023)

Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God chronicles the life and death of Amy Carlson, also known as Mother God, a self-proclaimed spiritual savior who built a cult through her online manifestos and live-streaming sessions. As Amy's health declined, her followers believed her death would lead to her evacuation by UFO and salvation for humanity. Told through the eyes of Amy’s devotees and constructed from the cult’s archival footage, the three-part docuseries captures the perils of internet proselytizing and a conspiracy-driven faith.

MY VERDICT: I knew a little about this story going in but it did not prepare me at all for what I was about to see. A great documentary series that does a good job of chronicling the start of a cult and its progression, to its unbelievable conclusion. Despite the fact that I knew how it all ended as it’s one of this things that makes this cult famous, I was a little annoyed at how they started this series with the end. I feel like more of a hint at it before going into the story would have been better to get more impact when you see what happens. Other than that I found it an interesting documentary with some strange and fascinating characters. If you’re a fan of true crime or interested in cults I would recommend this to you. Not great for those who are squeamish or easily creeped out though.
