JUST FINISHED WATCHING: SCHITT'S CREEK (2015–2020)
After being a victim of fraud, Johnny Rose and his family go from extremely wealthy to penniless overnight. The only asset left to them is a small, unsophisticated town: Schitt's Creek. They relocate there. Culture shock ensues.
TRIVIA: After her house burned down and she had a mere $3 left in her bank account, Annie Murphy considered quitting acting altogether. Fortunately, she got the audition for "Schitt's Creek" and landed the role of Alexis.
Eugene Levy (Johnny) works on the show with his real-life son and daughter. Dan Levyplays David, Johnny's son, and Sarah Levy plays Twyla, a waitress at the town diner.
As of 2020, it holds the record for the most Emmy wins in a single season for a comedy series (winning nine). It is also the first comedy series to sweep the Primetime Emmy Awards in all four major acting categories in a single year. In 2004, Angels in America(2003) won all four major acting awards in the Limited Series category in the same year. In 2021, The Crown (2016) won all four major acting awards in the Drama Series category in the same year.
Noah Reid's acoustic cover of Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" from the Season Four episode Schitt's Creek: Open Mic (2018) became a Top 10 single on the iTunes Canada chart in February/March 2018.
Throughout the series, Moira refers to individual wigs in her extensive collection by women's names. Names used included Krista, Robin, Maureen, Lorna, and Cindy. During a June 2020 Variety interview, Catherine O'Hara said that if it falls on her to name the wigs, she uses friends' names. In the same interview, O'Hara said that she was the one who asked if her character could wear and change wigs often, inspired by a dinner party she once went to where, with no explanation, the hostess would excuse herself and return wearing a different wig every half-hour or so.
Catherine O'Hara's character Moira Rose frequently wears black and white stripes as a nod to her role as Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice (1988). The production designer (the person who is at least partly responsible for creating and executing the aesthetic of a movie) for Beetlejuice was Bo Welch; during the Beetlejuice shoot, O'Hara and Welch started dating. They married in 1992 and have two sons.
MY VERDICT: I was a bit slow to the Schitt's Creek bandwagon but was so happy when I joined it. I’m not a huge comedy fan, but I found this to be a great mix of comedy and drama and the comedy style was right up my alley. It’s a wonderful story of the rich and privileged being bought down to earth and learning lessons with some of the greatest comedy performances of any modern programming. Every single actor is bringing something amazing and unique and you really have fallen in love with them all by the show’s end.
