JUST FINISHED WATCHING: THE OFFER (2022)
Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy's never-before-revealed experiences of making The Godfather (1972).
TRIVIA: When Al Ruddy meets Francis Ford Coppola to discuss The Godfather project, George Lucas is clearly in the background with several other individuals.
The Offer takes out a chunk of history as it glosses over George Lucas' involvement in the making of the Godfather franchise. The failure of THX-1138 bankrupted Zoetrope Studios. Lucas encouraged Francis Ford Coppola to make The Godfather to find their studio. He served as an assistant editor on the film, including finding footage of the empty hallways of the hospital. Marcia Lucas encouraged Coppola to cast Al Pacino as Michael. Lucas was a massive part of the franchise's success, but is relegated to a background character with his ex-wife, Marcia Lucas.
Armie Hammer was originally set to play Al Ruddy but was replaced by Miles Teller after he admitted to being "100% cannibal."
In The Offer, when discussing poster art for The Godfather, one of the designs is in a "Flying V" formation, which is shot down as not preferred by consumers. The art for The Offer is in a "Flying V" formation. It does have elements of The Godfather in the font and the marionette strings, however.
MY VERDICT: I was a bit disappointed by this. There wasn’t anything I could put my finger on that made me feel this way, I just was a little bored, it didn’t keep me wanting more and I feel like I finished it just to finish it. However there were some great performances, the best in my eyes from Matthew Goode who was definitely the MVP of this piece. I think you’re probably better off watching this if you don’t know a lot about the making of the film or the industry at this time as nothing was a surprise and there wasn’t anything to keep you tuning in, the human interest and relationship sub-plot weren’t interesting enough. Saying that, it was well made and there were some other great performances and the period styling and costuming was great.
